Ford introduced the large-scale manufacturing methods as early as 1914. They employed large-scale management of the industrial workforce through engineered sequences. This production philosophy is often dubbed Fordism. Besides the United States, they spread Fordism to overseas markets by acquiring Jaquar in 1989 and Land Rover in 2000. Moreover, they owned Volvo, the Swedish automotive company from 1999 to 2010. It was only in 2011, that they discontinued the Mercury brand. Under the Mercury marque, they sold entry-level luxury segment cars in North America and the Middle East since 1938. The Ford F Series engines have a cult following worldwide. The used Ford C Series Truck engine is rated one of the best in the automotive industry.
Ford C Series is a line of trucks produced from 1957 to 1990. It is the first cab-over-engine truck with a tilting cab from Ford. It replaced the COE variant F Series. Ford produced the C Series as both a straight truck and a tractor. From Class 5 to Class 8 GVWRs, they produced a range of these trucks. Also, it featured as the basis for fire apparatus trucks. It was the longest-produced truck in North America, running for over 33 years. Ford replaced these trucks in 1990 with the Ford Cargo.
Ford Motor Company assembled these trucks in the Louisville Assembly plant from 1957 to 1959 and in the Kentucky Truck Assembly plant from 1969 to 1990. It is closely related to the Ford H Series from 1961 to 1966 and the Mack N model from 1958 to 1962. There were both gasoline and diesel variants of the Ford C Series trucks. Also, they offered both manual and automatic versions of the trucks.
Ford offered many engines in both gasoline and diesel trucks. The gasoline engines were 4.9 L inline-6, Super Duty V8, Y-Block, 391 cubic inch FT V8, Y-Block V8, and 429 cubic inch commercial engines. The 4.9 inline-6 engine was first featured in the Ford F Series. This fuel injection engine is pushed up to 150 hp with a compression ratio of 8.8:1. The engine is known for low torque and high durability. It offers easy repair, service, and maintenance. The 477 Super Duty V8 pumped out 253 horses @ 3,400 RPM and 583 Nm @ 2,500 to 3,000 RPM. Similarly, the 534 Super Duty V8 returned horsepower and torque of 266 hp @ 3,200 RPM and 664 Nm @ 1800 to 2,300 RPM respectively. Also, the Ford Super Duty engines featured in the Ford N Series, Ford H Series, and Ford L Series.
The 292 Y-block used between 1957 to 1963 offered a horsepower of 200 horses @ 4,600 RPM in manual transmission vehicles. However, it offered 202 horses @ 4,600 RPM and a torque of 392 Nm @ 2,600 RPM behind automatic models. It returns a manual compression of 8.0:1 and an automatic compression of 8.4:1. The 302 Lincoln Y-Block V8 is best suited to heavy-duty truck applications. It produced more than 196 horses and powered the Ford F Series, Ford C Series, and Ford B Series heavy-duty trucks. The 332 Y-Block V8 returned 212 horses and 394 to 414 Nm of torque.
The Ford 370 engine is compatible with the Ford medium-duty F-Series from 1977 to 1991 and the Ford L Series Louisville Line from 1977 to 1985. Also, the Ford 429 engine featured in the Ford Thunderbird (1968–1973), Ford Mustang (1969–1971), Ford L Series (1977–1991), and Ford Medium Duty F Series(1977–1998), besides the Ford C Series from 1979 to 1987.
Ford offered a range of diesel engines - Caterpillar 1160/3208 V8, Cummins N Series inline-6, Cummins C8.3 inline-6, Ford 6.6L & 7.8L inline-6 and Detroit 8.2L 'Fuel Pincher' V8. The diesel engines featured in many of the Ford and Mercury models from the 1960s to 1990s. Cummins, Caterpillar, and Detroit produced some of the engineering marvels of the time.
