Honda B Series
Model years: 1998 to 2001
This series of engines is still a legend amongst hardcore fans. It is revered as a performance engine. Also, it provides a lot of tuning options. Moreover, with its inline-4 layout, it felt light on the drive train. The 1.8 L engine pulled a massive 210 hp @ 8000 RPM. Alongside, you have a torque range of 186/137. Though no versions featured VTEC, you can put such a head in all engines. It worked wonders on the B18 and B20 versions since the components are easily interchangeable. This all-aluminum block quickly transforms to the powerful LS-VTEC configuration.
Honda K Series
Model years: 2001-present
There is a range of K Series variations in Honda lineups. It is often considered the successor to the iconic B series. With an inline-4 layout, the 2.3 L engine pumped up horsepower of 190 hp @ 6,800 RPM and torque of 223 NM. It offered better-flowing heads, much superior to even the best ones from the B Series. With superbly styled ports and larger valves, it offered much more efficiency. Moreover, it featured forged crankshafts and robust con-rods. Ultimately, the higher engine displacement opened up possibilities to build a powerhouse of an NA engine.
Honda D Series
Model years: 1984 to 2005
D series made rounds as an economy sibling of the contemporary B series. Both of these engines parallelly ruled the market. It offers a modest engine displacement of 1,396 cc. It returned a horsepower of 90 hp @ 6,300 RPM and a torque of 112 NM. Initially fitted with lower displacement and SOHC options, they were tuned to become a long-lasting engine returning great fuel economy. Albeit having some of the performance versions, the D motor favorably makes way for the B Series.
Honda H Series
Model years: 1991 to 2002
Fitted to bigger cars that needed more torque, the H Series came in handy as a performance engine. With just 2.1 L displacement, it offered horsepower of up to 220 hp @ 7200 RPM and torque of up to 221 NM. There were two options sourced from the F Series – 2.2 L VTEC and 2.3 L Non-VTEC. It is again an all-aluminum engine, while few versions featured a closed-deck design. These engines are often paid to B-Series transmission, therein easily swapping it into civic. With an inline-4 engine layout, it used bore-stoke dimensions of 87.0 X 90.7 mm.
Honda F Series
Model years: 1996 to 2004
AP1 and AP2 S2000 are the popular units from the Honda F Series. Its ample 2 L displacement helped pull a horsepower of 200 hp @ 6,800 RPM and torque of 197 NM. Like all Honda engines, the F series offered VTEC as well. Albeit, being a DOHO One, most of the units were SOHC. It’s considered a big block amongst the four cylinders. Since Honda didn’t work much on this series, it ended up playing second fiddle to its H and B counterparts.
Honda G Series
Model years: 1989 to 1998
Though Honda is popular for 5-cylinders in racing motorcycles, the G series is their only inline-5 in cars. With displacement up to 2451 cc, the engines returned horsepower of up to 190 hp @ 6,600 RPM and torque up to 243 NM. Both the 20 Valve Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) versions we categorized as G20A and G25A. The G Series found its way under the hood of bigger models such as Inspire, Vigor, and RAFAGo. It was mounted longitudinally in FWD cars.
Honda C Series
Model years: 1985 to 2005
C series featured right from Honda’s first-ever passenger car. This 90″ V6 engine is sold as mid-mounted transversely and front-mounted longitudinally. With an engine displacement of up to 3 L, it returned a horsepower of up to 274 hp @ 7300 and torque of up to 285 NM. At the entry-level, the 2L variant is featured in the Honda Legend. However, it featured in the higher end as a VTEC Supercar engine, pulling 300 HP with a 3.2 L engine.
Honda J Series
Model years: 1996-present
J Series is an updated V6 series in Honda models. Thanks to a narrower bank angle, it proves as an efficient compact engine. Also, it is tuned for better low and mid-range torque. The VTEC is mostly present on the intake side. However, VTEC featured on both cams only in the J37 unit. Alongside a massive horsepower above 300 HP, it packed some serious torque. The series saw engine displacements above the 3.6L mark.
