  • Finding a Used Jeep Engine Shouldn't Be This Hard — But It Usually Is

If you've been hunting for a used Jeep engine, you already know how frustrating it gets. You call one place and they've got nothing in stock. Another seller sends you a unit that looks like it spent three years sitting in a flood. And half the listings online don't even tell you the mileage.

We've been putting Jeep engines back on the road for years, and the number one thing our customers tell us is the same every time — they just wanted someone to be straight with them about what they were buying.

That's what we do here. Every used Jeep engine in our inventory is physically inspected before it ships, mileage is documented, and every sale is backed by our 3-Year/30,000-Mile Warranty. No guessing, no surprises.

  • Why So Many Jeep Owners Go the Used Route

A factory-new Jeep engine from a dealership can easily run you $4,000 to $8,000 before labor. For a lot of people — especially those driving a 2008 Liberty or a 2012 Patriot — that number just doesn't make sense against the value of the vehicle.

A quality used Jeep engine from a low-mileage donor vehicle solves that problem. You're getting the same Chrysler-engineered block, the same displacement, the same compatibility — at a fraction of the cost. And if the unit has been properly inspected and comes with a real warranty, it'll run just as well as anything else you'd put in that engine bay.

We're not saying used is always the answer. If you want something fully rebuilt to OEM spec, we also carry remanufactured Jeep engines that go through a full rebuild process with replaced bearings, seals, and wear components. But for the majority of Jeep owners who need a solid, dependable motor without spending a fortune, used is the smart call.

Jeep Cherokee Engine — One of Our Most Requested Units

The Jeep Cherokee has been around long enough that there's a massive pool of used engines available for it — which is good news if yours just gave out.

Depending on the year you're working with, the jeep cherokee engine lineup includes the legendary 4.0L inline-six from the XJ generation (one of the most reliable engines Chrysler ever produced), the 3.7L V6 used in the KK generation, and the more modern 3.2L Pentastar V6 and 2.0L turbo in the KL models. Each of these has its own quirks — the 4.0L is almost bulletproof but seals can go on high-mileage units; the 3.2L Pentastar runs great when maintained but hates being neglected on oil changes.

We stock Cherokee engines across most of these generations. When you call or order, tell us your exact year and trim and we'll match you to the right unit.

Jeep Patriot Engines — Harder to Find, But We've Got Them

The Patriot got discontinued in 2017, which means the aftermarket supply for Jeep Patriot engines has been tightening up. Most Patriot owners are dealing with either the 2.0L or 2.4L World Gas Engine (also called the ED/ED3 series), and finding a clean low-mileage replacement isn't always easy.

The 2.4L is the more popular of the two — better power delivery, smoother highway feel — but both variants are available in our inventory. If your Patriot threw a rod, started burning oil, or just isn't turning over anymore, a used replacement engine is almost certainly cheaper than trading the car and starting over on payments.

One thing to know about Patriot engines specifically: timing chain wear is a known issue on higher-mileage units. We check for that during inspection, and we'll tell you upfront if anything looks questionable.

Liberty Engine for Sale — 3.7L and 2.8L Diesel Both Available

The Jeep Liberty had a solid run from 2002 to 2012, and both engine options it came with are still worth keeping on the road. The 3.7L V6 is the more common find — it's a torquey, capable motor that handles both city driving and trail use without complaint. The 2.8L CRD diesel is rarer but highly sought after by Liberty owners who want the fuel economy and low-end grunt that diesel delivers.

If you're looking for a liberty engine for sale, availability is the main challenge. We source our Liberty engines from late-model, low-mileage vehicles wherever possible. Every unit gets checked for oil leaks, seal condition, and compression before it leaves our facility. We also back it with the same warranty that covers every engine we sell.

Jeep Wrangler Owners — We See You

Wrangler engines get worked hard. Rock crawling, mud runs, towing, overlanding — these motors go through more stress than almost any other vehicle in the Jeep lineup. When a Jeep Wrangler engine finally gives out, owners want a replacement fast because a Wrangler sitting in the driveway is genuinely painful.

We carry Wrangler engines across generations — the 4.0L inline-six from the TJ era, the 3.8L V6 from the JK, and the 3.6L Pentastar that became the workhorse of the JL generation. The 3.6L in particular is one of the best engines Jeep has put in a Wrangler — smooth, powerful, and durable when it's properly maintained.

What to Check Before You Commit to Any Used Engine

You don't have to be a mechanic to make a smart purchase — you just need to ask the right questions. Before buying any used Jeep engine, make sure you know the mileage, whether service history is available, and what warranty the seller is offering.

At minimum, a trustworthy seller should be able to tell you :

  • Where the engine was pulled from and approximate mileage
  • Whether it was inspected for leaks, seal integrity, and compression
  • What the warranty covers and for how long

If a seller can't answer those questions clearly, walk away. There are plenty of clean engines out there — you shouldn't have to gamble on one.

We cover all of the above on every engine we sell, and our support team is available Monday through Friday if you have questions before placing an order.

Is a used Jeep engine a reliable option?

Absolutely — when it comes from a reputable source. A used engine with documented mileage, a clean inspection record, and a solid warranty can perform just as well as a new unit. The key is buying from someone who stands behind what they sell.

How do I know which engine fits my specific Jeep?

Year, model, and trim are the three things we need to match you correctly. Some Jeep engines cross over between models — certain Cherokee and Grand Cherokee variants share engine families — but always confirm before purchasing. Our team can verify fitment for your exact vehicle.

What's the difference between a used engine and a remanufactured one?

A used engine is pulled from a donor vehicle, inspected, and sold as-is (with any issues documented). A remanufactured engine is fully disassembled, worn parts replaced, and rebuilt to OEM spec. Remanufactured costs more but comes closer to new condition. We offer both — the right choice depends on your budget and how long you plan to keep the vehicle.

Do your used Jeep engines come with a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by our 3-Year or 30,000-Mile Warranty. Full terms are on our Warranty Page.

How long does shipping take?

We ship free to commercial addresses and most orders go out within 1–2 business days. Delivery timelines vary by location — contact our support team for an estimate specific to your area.
