Willys Go, Devil,
Originally built for the armed forces, this engine went to all places of action in World War II. The civilian Jeep, dubbed the CJ aided in mainstreaming off-roading experience. It soon became the post-war time, therein as an appeal in automobile brands. The battle-tested Go Devil didn’t need marketing to start. Evolving in just under 5 years, it proved as a fuel-efficient motor. Besides fuel efficiency, it offered top reliability and torque. The engine produced impressive horsepower and torque of up to 60 hp and 105 lb-fit for its time. All of this came from just 134 cubic inches of displacement. It fitted in so smoothly for civilian riding, gaining an improved cooling system and smooth crankshaft. Hence, it was a natural fit even on rural roads. They discontinued production of this engine in 1954, with the introduction of Willys Hurricane. It added a considerable power boost to its original design.
401 V8
The 401 V8 is the largest ever V8 to be fitted into any Jeep model. With impressive AMC architecture, the 401 got multiple guises to be used in full-sized Jeep models including Wagoneer, Cherokee, and J-Series pickups. 401 cubic inches of displacement defines the third-generation V8s from AMC. Also, it featured a forged set of rods and a crankshaft. By the end of the seventies, the engine returned a horsepower of 330 hp. Before the emission controls came in place, it returned a torque of 400 lb-fit. This large displacement motor found its place under the hood of larger SUVs from Jeep. Oil cars and the resulting fuel price hike saw the end of these engines in passenger cars by 1977.
4.0L I6
4.0L I6 is by far the most popular engine from Jeep. The I6 stands for 4.0 inline 6-cylinder engine. It is one of those final motors developed by AMC. Debuting in 1986, it became the go-to option for the Jeep Cherokee XJ. Jeep made it a mainstay in three changes over 2 decades of Jeep history. Reliability offered in 4.0 Inline 6, accounts for its popularity. It’s a fuel-efficient motor that can take in a lot of abuse. In the nineties, it returned a decent horsepower of 190 hp. It featured across many Jeep lineups including the large Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, and also in Comanche pickup.
The Willys Go Devil, 401 V8, and 4.0L I6 put the generations of Jeep’s awesomeness at full display. There are many more gems in the Jeep series of engines.
