Used Oldsmobile Transmission

Oldsmobile is a U.S. brand of automobiles produced for the most part by General Motors. Operating since 1897, their operations have from the outstart been centered around the Michigan plant alone. As a GM division, it was noted for its groundbreaking tech and stylings. It sold in good numbers from 1983 to 1986. Owing to competition in the 90s, the sales fell in numbers. Interestingly, they were the oldest surviving automobile brand by 2004. Moreover, they are amongst the world's oldest along with Mercedes Benz, Renault, Fiat, and more. Their groundbreaking technology adds value to used Oldsmobile transmission even today. Let's look at more than a century of evolution of Oldsmobile models in brief, especially from a transmission point of view.

1800s to 1930s

Oldsmobile operations began towards the end of the 19th century. They started with the High Wheeler in 1897. In terms of transmissions, they started with the 1901 Curved Dash Model R 2-speed manual. It continued with the 2-speed 1904 Light Tonneau Model LT. They ventured into 3-speed manual transmission as early as 1906, with the Model S. Even in 1917, they continued with a 3-speed manual transmission in Light Eight. Light Eight Series 44 came fitted with a 2.9 L engine producing a horsepower of 44 hp. The 1932 F series or exactly the F-32 made use of 3-speed manual transmission. However, they upped the engine capacity and horsepower to 3490 cc and 74 hp. Later, the F-35 of the F series launched in 1935 pushed the horsepower to 90 hp. 2-speed and 3-speed manual transmissions were maintained by Oldsmobile from the start of the 20th century to up unto the late 1930s.

1930s to 1950s

Oldsmobile first ventured into 4-speed automatic transmission in the 1939 Series 60 (1st generation). It is one of the pioneers at the time to dive into automatic, let alone 4-speed in the time. They confirmed the trend of 4-speed automatic with their 1941 Series 70 (2nd Gen). With a 3.9 L engine pumping over 100 hp, it reached a top speed of 71 mph and did a 0 to 60 in 27.3 seconds. The 1949 Series 99 Convertible reached a top speed of 89 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in over 19 seconds. Later, the 1953 Fiesta upped its top speed and 0 to 60 mph acceleration to 88 mph and 17.4 seconds respectively. Even better, the 1954 Series 88 improved it to a top speed of 101 mph and 0 to 60 mph acceleration in just 14.3 seconds. Its 5.3 L engine produced a decent horsepower of 170 hp. Then, the 1954 Series 88 brought it to a top speed of 104 mph and 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 13.5 seconds while producing 185 hp.

Oldsmobile post 1950s

In 1954, the Series 88 Super convertible (2nd Gen) reached a top speed of 102 mph and raced from 0 to 60 mph in 14.4 seconds. The same year Series 98 (4th Gen) returned top speed of 104 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in under 14 seconds. Around that time they presented two of the finely styled concept cars Cutlass and F88.

Later, the 1955 Series 98 Coupe (4th Gen) fitted with 5.3 L produced a massive horsepower of 202 hp. Fitted with a 4-speed automatic transmission reached a top speed of 108 mph and raced from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in just 12.8 seconds. The top-of-the-line, 1956 Series 88 Deluxe brought down the 0 to 60 timings to just 11.5 seconds. The 1957 Series 88 (3rd gen) reached a top speed of 117 mph and did a 0 to 60 in a record time of 10.4 seconds. Moreover, the 1957 Series 98 Coupe (5th Gen) returned similar stats. These were quite some of the quickest for urban, civil sedans in the 1950s.

The 1960s were marred with reverting to manual transmissions. It was one of the customer demands of the time. The hot road driving enthusiasts didn't want to miss an exciting manual transmission riding experience. The 1964, they used a 4-speed manual in 1964 4-4-2 Convertible (1st gen). It reached a top speed of 126 mph and did 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds.

2/3-speed automatics

However, they also used a 3-speed automatic transmission in the 1965 Series 98 Convertible (8th Gen). The close to 7 L engine pumped up to a massive 370 hp. The convertible reached a top speed of 126 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in just 7.7 seconds. As part of the variations and experiments, they even went with a 2-speed automatic transmission in the 1965 F-85 Cutlass Convertible (2nd Gen). The sedan reached a top speed of 125 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph 8.4 mph. Again their 1965 Starfire Coupe (2nd Gen) did a 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds, fitted with a 3-speed automatic.

1980s to 2000s

The 1987 Toronado Trofeo (4th Gen) made use of a 4-speed automatic transmission. Its 3.8 L engine produced up to 150 hp, thereby reaching a top speed of 121 mph, and did a 0 to 60 in under 12 seconds. Later, the popular 1988 Cutlass Supreme (5th Gen) proved a darling among car owners looking for a civil, urban vehicle.
