Used Acura RL Engine

The 1970s to 1990s was the time of Japanese imports into the U.S. automotive industry. However, only the Japanese small cars were popular initially. In the late 80s, Honda first came up with the Acura, their luxury brand for the United States. Primarily based in the United States, Acura has been in operation since 1986. Also, they sell their models in Mexico Canada North America, Panama, and Kuwait. So, a used Acura RL engine travels worldwide.

Moreover, Acura first introduced Honda's VTEC in the United States. Also, they introduced newer technologies to revive their fortunes post-2000. In their prime, they competed against the likes of top luxury brands including BMW and Mercedes Benz. Also, Japanese car makers launched their luxury divisions after witnessing the success of Acura. Particularly, Toyota launched its Lexus brand and Nissan launched their Infiniti marquee.

Acura RL

The Acura RL, a full-size luxury car was in production from 1996 to 2012, spanning two generations. It served as Acura's flagship, succeeding the Acura Legend. Later, the Acura RLX replaced the Acura RL in 2013. The model name, 'RL' stands for Refined Luxury. Along with RLX and Legend, the RL is adapted from the Japanese Honda Legend. Moreover, the first-generation RL is a rebadged version of the third-gen Honda Legend.

Introduced in 1996 for the U.S. markets, it replaced the second-generation Acura Legend. Also, the second-generation Acura RL is a rebadged version of the fourth-gen Honda Legend. They sold it in the United States in 2004 as the 2005 model year. Later, the third generation RL of the 2014 model year, was the Acura RLX. It was in production from 1995 to 2012 for model years 1996 to 2012. The Acura RL model is assembled in the Sayama Plant, in Saitama, Japan. This 4 door sedan replaced the Acura Legend and led the way for the Acura RLX. The Acura RL sold over 15k units annually for three years straight from 1996 to 1998.

First Generation RL

The first generation RL was produced from 1995 to 2004 for model years 1996 to 2004. Mitsuhiro Honda and Tamotsu Okamoto designed the first gen RL in 1993. It used a front-engine and front-wheel drive layout. It uses a 3.5 L V6 mated with a 4-speed automatic. The C35A1 engine made up the powertain of this model. It is an SOHC engine that pumps out a horsepower of 210 hp @ 5,200 RPM and a torque of 304 Nm @ 2,800 RPM respectively. After 2002, it pumped out an increased horsepower and torque of 225 hp @ 5,200 RPM and 314 Nm @ 2,800 RPM respectively. Moreover, the C35A has the largest displacement in the C series. It is mass-produced using block-forged connecting rods, maintaining its balance and strong bottom end. It retained the 9.6:1 compression ratio from the C32A, despite the increased engine displacement.

Second Generation RL

The second generation RL was produced from 2004 to 2013 for model years 2005 to 2013. Toshinobu Minami designed the engine in 2002. It uses the front-engine and all-wheel drive layout. The models used a 3.5 L V6 engine producing 290 horses from 2005 to 2008. Later, the models used a 3.7 L V6 engine producing 300 horses from 2009 to 2012. These Honda J series engines were fitted to a 5-speed automatic from 2005 to 2010. Later, they used a 6-speed automatic since 2011. The car was reviewed for CNET Editor's Choice award for Top Tech car from 2005 to 2011.

The Honda J series engines are built at the Anna, Ohio, and Lincoln, Alabama engine plants. The J Series engines were introduced in 1996, post the Honda C Series. It uses both direct fuel injection and multi-point fuel injection systems. The model was discontinued in 2011 and succeeded by Acura RLX in 2012. The production model debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
