Used Ford Transmission

Ford is an all-American automotive brand with headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. Founded by Henry Ford in 1903, they sell cars and commercial vehicles. They sold luxe models under the Lincoln brand. Besides, the company also owns Troller, a Brazilian SUV brand, and stakes in Aston Martin and Jiangling Motors. It has bagged JVs in China, Russia, Turkey, Thailand and Taiwan. Owing to efficient models and engineering standards, the used Ford transmission is a hot commodity any day. Let’s look at how the models have progressed since the start of the 20th century, especially in terms of transmission models.

3-speed till 1965

The 1903 Model A started as a 2-speed planetary, with a 1.6 L engine pumping meager 8 hp. 1904 Model AC, Model B, Model C, Model F, Model K, Model R, Model S, and Model T used the same 2-speed planetary transmission. By 1927, Ford started using a 3-speed manual transmission, which was quite a big jump for its time. Starting from the 1927 Ford Model A to the 1932 Ford Model B, 1932 Ford Model 18, 1932 Ford Model Y, 1933 Ford Model 40, Rhienland, 1935 Ford Model 48, 1934 Ford Model 50, 1935 CX to 1935 Ford Model 50, all cars used the 3-speed manual transmission. Nevertheless, there isn’t any chance, you would see these vintage cars on roads anymore.

However, the 3-speed manual continued even with the bulkier and more powerful cars, such as the 1941 Deluxe 11A, 1942 Deluxe model 21A, 1945, Super Deluxe Sportsman, 1948 Super Deluxe Station Wagon, 1952 Customline Fordor Sedan, and 1965 Country Squire Sixth gen models. While using the same transmission, Ford resolutely advanced its engine calibrations achieving top speeds and better horsepower. Moreover, the brand was concentrating on achieving power for off-roading, mountain driving, and a variety of other challenging applications.

4-speed manual

The Bronco 1st Gen debuted in 1966 with a 4-speed manual transmission, reaching a top speed of 80 mph. Cortina MK 11, released in the U.K. the same year also employed a 4-speed manual transmission. The early pinnacle of the 4-speed manual came in the form of the 1966 Galaxie 500. The 7 L engine pumped up an impressive 345 hp of power. Fitted with a 4-speed manual transmission, it reached a top speed of 127 mph and raced from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.1 mph. These were remarkable numbers in the late sixties, or even in the early seventies.

The GT540 MK 11 supercar topped it by doing a 0 to 60 in just 5.4 seconds. Fitted with a 4-speed manual, this 7-litre engine pumped out 485 hp and reached top speeds close to 200 mph. The Zodiac Mark IV and Zephyr Mark IV were released in the U.K. in 1966 followed by the same 4-speed manual. They proved to be more than decent whips, returning excellent sales figures too. The 5th Gen F-Series was also launched in 1966, making it a special year for the brand.

5-speed manual

Ford progressed to a 5-speed manual with their 1967 GT40 MK III. The Grand Tourer boasted a 4.7 L engine that pumped out horsepower of 306 bhp. It did a 0 to 60 acceleration in blitzing 5.5 seconds. It reached a top speed of 158 mph, decently impressive for its time. Interestingly Ford revisited the 3-speed manual transmission 1967 LTD,1967, and Third Generation Ranchero. Using a 3-speed manual, the 1967 5th Gen Thunderbird proved adequate for being a supercar. With a top speed of 130 mph, it raced from 0 to 60 in just 9 seconds.

Even in 1968, many Ford models came fitted with 3-speed manual transmissions. It included the likes of Custom 500 Ranch Wagon, XL Convertible, 2nd Gen E series, and Galaxie 500 Fastback. Nevertheless, race cars such as the GT40 MK IV came fitted with a 5-speed manual transmission. The GT40 raced from 0 to 60 mph in a blitzing 3.3 seconds and reached a top speed of 186 mph.

It was not until the late eighties, that the 5-speed manual became a regular feature in Ford Models. In the budget car category, 3-speed manuals dominated the 70s, and 4-speed dominated the late 70s and early 80s. The EXP second Gen in 1985 brought the trend of using a 5-speed manual regularly in Ford models. Being a sub 2 L engine, it produced 86 hp, top speed of 109 mph, and did a 0 to 60 in under 13 seconds.

Ford in late 80s

The Granada MK II released in the same year too used a 5-speed manual transmission. The 2nd Gen Orion in 1986 continued the trend of using a 5-speed manual on Ford cars. The RS200 EVO launched in 1986 also used the 5-speed manual transmission. This supercar did a monstrous 0 to 60 in just 3 seconds. That reflects on the power of Ford engines fitted to a 5-speed manual transmission. Weighing at over 2600 lbs, the RS200 EVO featured a 2.1 L engine, capable of extracting horsepower of up to 580 bhp.

The 1986 1st Gen Taurus, 1988, 2nd Gen Tempo, and 1989 1st Gen Probe continued on the 5-speed manual in a budget-friendly manner. The Thunderbird 10th Gen released in 1989 for the first time used a 4-speed automatic transmission. With a 4 L engine, pumping out 140 hp of power, it reached a top speed of 124 mph. The Escort 5th Gen and Orion 3rd Gen in the year 1990, took the 5-speed manual transmission into the 90s.

In 1991, the Explorer Sport, a renowned off-roaded used the 5-speed manual too. Similarly, another offroader, the 1992 Bronco also used the 5-speed manual transmission. Till the Ranger-type semi-pickup truck in 1998, the 5-speed manual was featured on most Ford models. Moreover, when fitted to a 5-speed manual, any engine irrespective of capacity tends to do just fine. Moreover, the manual transmission mode provided an exciting driving experience to old-school drivers of the 80s, 90s, and some even today.
