Before the Plymouth 318 V8, Chrysler produced an A-engine 318 until 1967. It was quite popular in the Canadian circles till Chrysler discontinued production. Then, the LA or Light ‘A’ block replaced the big bulky boys. LA engines premiered in many Chrysler division products from as early as 1959. A series powered many top-of-the-range cars including 1957-59 Plymouth Fury. Furthermore, they tuned it with 2 four four-barrel corborators, thereby amplifying its horsepower to 290 hp. It was the highest horsepower A series engine from Chrysler. It turned Fury into a force to reckon with, in the Americas in the 60s & 70s. After a few years, in a quick period, it was regarded as a smaller displacement engine, factoring in the competition in the industry.

A series 318 sports a 3.91″ bore and 3.31″ stroke. With its bore exceeding the stroke dimension, it proved more of a squared engine. That’s when the Chrysler administration thought of replacing the A series with an economical one. light-weight, lesser size engine. That’s how the LA or the Lightweight A series happened. Then, the Plymouth 318 V8 began as a 273 cubic inch engine, which featured in the 1964 model year. 273 cubic feet brought the best blend of the old and the new. It still had the crankshaft, bearings, and bearing caps of the old A series, with the help of timing change and connecting rods. Even better, it improved the older dimensions by 3.63″ bore and 3.31″ stroke. It made its way under the hood of Chryslers from the start to the fag end of the 60s.

The transition from A series to LA series

The wedgeheads replaced the legendary components of the A series to make LA in cost-cutting and size-reduction measures. Besides getting smaller, the LA got even the more lighter and smaller. Additionally, the newly found block foundry allowed thinner inner walls and halved the blockway dimensions. Then, the sparkplugs got above the exhaust manifold, allowing for easier repair and maintenance. The older B engines usually have sparkplug locations, not ideal for replacements. Ultimately, the transition from the A series to the LA series meant a reduction in size, weight, and costs, thanks to a few well-thought-out changes. In addition to size, weight, and cost, it facilitates easier maintenance and offers extra reliability. Albeit its smaller size, the 273 cubic inch 318 V8 produced 180-275 hp. Eventually, the 273 lasted as long as 1969, superseded by the 318 V8.

318 V8 debuted in the US and Canada in 1967 and 1968 respectively. It packed the same horsepower and torque as the A series. They replaced the hemispherical head design, inherent to the A series. 318 is a workhorse, which often doubled up with a Carter two-barrel carburetor, generating a sub 150 horsepower. Also, performance variants existed in higher horsepower cars, including police var variants, often fitted with four-barrel Quadrajet or thermal quad carburetors in 1978. With hydraulic valve lifters, 318 V8 proved more reliable and reduced one less adjustment for car owners. With every smaller revision in 1969, the car upped the ante in the reliability aspect. By 1988 Doge trucks had better fuel injection systems than what 318 initially offered to vehicles.
