Laforza or the Rayton-Fissore Magnum is a luxury off-roader, marketed as Magnum from 1985 to 1998, and Laforza from 1989 to 2003. Laforza is the marketed version of the American V8-powered vehicle. Interestingly, the Magnum started as a military and police vehicle. Given its Italian leather interior and some cosmetic upgrades, it quickly transformed into a luxury off-roader. The range of 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder, and 8-cylinder engine vehicles were dubbed as the luxury. Intended as a Range Rover, it competed with its counterpart to some extent of success. To compete with Range Rover, they upgraded the luxurious interior and came with turbodiesels and other fuel-effective compact engines. During its time, fuel economy was highly sought in the European Automotive markets. The vehicles were assembled in the United States as well. Laforza first arrived in the United States by the onset of 1989. A few modifications were made to the Magnum base frame. Some of the modifications include the reinforced cross members. There were a few minor details made to make full use of the 4.9 L Ford V8 engines. It is commonly dubbed as the 5.0. EFI engine. Fitted with an AOD transmission, it offers the perfect driving experience. Coupled with the Chrysler's Selec-Trac, it offered the perfect high 2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive, and also the low 4-wheel drive. Also, you have the new Process 229 transfer case fitted with all components pretty much together. In Pininfarina, Itality, they added the rolling chassis along with finished interiors. While, the C&C, Brighton, installed all the U.S.-made mechanical components. Additionally, the body also got a little restyling along with different bumpers and tail lights, plus the headlights, grille, and other components.
Overall, the U.S. version retained the original Magnum's leather interior. But, they upgraded the vehicle with a new category of dash and seats. In addition, you have the new center tunnel and door panels. On the whole, you have a better-looking and trimmed vehicle from the original Magnum. 1989 to 1993
Pininfarina did the re-assembly of the original Laforza 2-liter model. It featured the Ford 5.0 EFI V8 engine. The truck version is fitted with automatic overdrive transmission or the AOD. Along with a high/low gear transfer case, they created the new process model 229.
1995 to 1998
In 1995, the Laforza was fitted with a Ford V8 5.0 SEFI V8 engine. It's an extracted engine from the Mustang GT model. A few models got the truck version of the 5.8 SEFI V8 engine. However, they retained the same transmission and transfer case as their predecessors. Some of the lineups got an optional Kenne Bell supercharger. They transferred the manufacturing process to Rayton-Fissore's successor, the Magnum Industriale in 1996. Barring minor changes and power upgrades, they didn't go for the total revamp.
The model went through major restructuring in 1998, thereby creating the Laforza SpA. They used the Ford V8 in the updated Laforza Prima. They used the 5.0 SEFI, characteristic of the Ford Explorer. Also, an electronic automatic transmission and full-time 4-wheel drive transfer case were used without the low gears. Optionally, they provided the Eaton supercharger. Moreover, the Prima was renamed the 1999 Magnum edition, while they combined the Ford V8 with the GM 6 L V8 with the Eaton supercharger.
Also, a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission featuring a Hydra-matic model is used. In addition, you have the 2-wheel drive the high 4-wheel drive, or the low 4-wheel drive transfer case is offered as a bonus option. Using a sub-4 Liter engine, they planned an exclusive version for Europe. Nevertheless, such a proposed and prototyped model never saw the light of the day. Soon, Laforza also went out of business.
