Zastava Automobiles is a subsidiary of the Zastava Vehicles Group. The group went bankrupt entirely in 2017. Founded in Yugoslavia it was named the Red Flag Factories, expressing a taste of the communist state. Interestingly, the brand survived from the capitalist interests of a U.S. entrepreneur on the rebound. Moreover, the communist country also broke up in 1992, with used Yugo transmission alone surviving in the U.S. today. The Zastava or Yugo operated from 1953 up until 2008.
However, the Yugo arrived in the United States only in 1985, releasing just the Yugo Cabri and Yugo GV Series. Though the brand came under severe criticism and even ridicule, it gained a cult following in the 80s and 90s. Coming from a communist nation, the cars had low-cost features or even the lack of many, thereby reducing its overall budget. The used Yugo transmission and engine are still hot favorites in cheap used car parts markets online now.
Yugo debuted in the automobile industry with Zastava AR 51/55. The 1.9L engine pumped up 52 hp and reached a top speed of 62 mph. They straightaway ventured into 4-speed manual transmission, with their 1954 Zastava 1100. With the same kind of engine and transmission, they launched the 1956 Zastava 615 pickup. Similarly, they launched the 1959 Zastava 1100 T with the same engine and transmission combination. The 1951 750 used a lighter 767 cc engine, pumping a horsepower of 25 hp. It reached a top speed of 68 mph and did a 0 to 60 in 54 seconds.
More than power, performance, and premium features, Zastava focuses on budget-friendly cars. Even by 1970, they released the Zastava 430, a minivan, which came fitted with 767 cc and 4-speed manual transmission. In the same year, they came with a rather sporty model, Zastava 125 PZ, reaching top speed of 87 mph & doing 0 to 60 mph in 21.5 seconds. The models did well in Yugoslavia, enabling a large population to own a car affordably.
The seventies saw Yugos being exported to other countries in Europe. The Zastava 101 (1st Gen) featured a 1.1 L engine and 4-speed manual transmission. The car pumped horsepower of 54 hp, reached a top speed of 84 mph, and did 0 to 60 miles per hour in 19 seconds. The 1971 101 Lux also returned similar power and performance statistics. Oddly, the 1973 Zastava 635 featured an 8-speed manual transmission and a 3.4 L engine. It pumped a horsepower of 81 hp and reached a top speed of 65 mph. Moreover, it performed decently as low priced large truck.
Later, the 1976 750 S used unusually different and appealing stylings for a Zastava car. They returned to the boxy exterior in their 1971 101 L returning to 1.1 L engine and 4-speed manual transmission. The 1979 750 LC continued with 767 cc, pumping up to 25 hp. As usual, it came fitted with a 4-speed manual, reaching a top speed of 68 mph. The engine capacities are indicated with the nomenclature of models and lineups.
Zastava upped to a bit of power and performance in the eighties. Though not much, they bettered Yugo models in comparison with pre-80s. The 1983 101 GT reached a top speed of 90 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in 17 seconds. Even better, the 1983 101 GT 65 reached a top speed of 93 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in 15 seconds. Later their 1985 Yugo Koral, a flagship during its time reached top speed of 90 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in 17 seconds.
The 1986 Yugo Koral 65 bettered it by a top speed of 96 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in 14 seconds. However, not many of the 80s models arrived in the United States. Much later after 1985, Yugo came with their Cabrio and GV line-ups in the United States. At Turbo Auto Parts, you can find used Yugo transmission for all Cabrio and GV lineups.
The Cabriolet from Yugo sold in good number of units in the United States. It came fitted with a 1.3 L engine and 5-speed manual transmission. It reached a top speed of 93 mph, with the engine pumping a horsepower of meager 61 hp. The Yugo GVX came fitted with a 1.3L EFI engine, exclusively for the United States. Yugo came up with an exclusive lineup for the United States including Yugo GV Plus Automatic, Yugo GV Sport, Yugo GVC, Yugo GVL, and Yugo GVS.
Of the entire list, only the Yugo GV Plus featured an automatic transmission. The 3-speed automatic transmission from Yugo proved reliable and durable. Moreover, it has a proven tried, and tested track record on U.S. roads. Though the models came under ridicule, they sold in good numbers owing to price point and durable transmissions. The models made good sales totaling 141, 651 units from the period 1985 to 1992, peaking at 48,812 units in 1987.
The basic entry-level GV model, where GV stands for Great Value, sold for $3390. The sporty-looking GVS gained cosmetic upgrades quickly. Later, the GVC gained a sunroof, whereas the GVL got slight trims and refined upholstery. Finally, the GVX came fitted with a 1.3 L engine and 5-speed manual transmission to appeal to hot rod enthusiasts. After all of these models, Yugo released the Yugo Cabrio convertible exclusively for the United States in 1998.
