It came fitted with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Honda launched two generations of Acura EL, exclusive to Canada. Despite formidable sales figures, Honda discontinued the EL in 2006.

Its 1.6 L SOHC VTEC engines made the car all the more powerful. It pumps out up to 127 horses @ 6,600 RPM and 145 Nm of torque @ 5,500 RPM. It returned similar specifications to the American Civic Ex Sedan. The D16Y8 is an I4 engine powered by the model to top speeds and high reliability. There were three different models - Base, Sport and Premium models. The Base models came with a CD player and air conditioning. The Sport model made use of 15' alloy wheels. Finally, the Premium version had some cosmetic upgrades including leather seats and decorative spoiler.

Second Generation (2001-Present)

Honda redesigned the Acura EL from the 2001 model year, based on the seventh-generation Civic. In addition, they used the D17A2 engine. This SOHC, VTEC engine proved more powerful and torquier. With an engine displacement of 1.7 L engine, it returned a decent horsepower of 127 hp. Honda produced this engine from 2001 to 2005. It used a body and chassis similar to the Honda Element, Honda Civic, Acura Integra, and Honda CR-V. With a wheelbase of 103.1', it strolled smoothly through the Canadian roads. The second-gen EL offered touring and premium trim levels. The second-generation EL models featured an ABS anti-lock braking system. However, they used electronic brakeforce distribution as a standard feature since 2003 models Honda D Engine.

The D Series is an inline-4-cylinder engine used in many compact models. It powered Honda's top models such as the Civic, CRX, Stream, Logo, and Integra (1st Gen). It offered an engine displacement range of 1.2 to 1.7 liters. It uses either SOHC or DOHC configurations. Additionally, it also includes the VTEX variable valve lift in some models. The first generation EL used the D16Y8 engine. The engine also found its place under the hood of the 1996–1997 Honda Del Sol Si and 1996–2000 Honda Civic EX in the United States.
