Acura is the luxury division of Honda, the Japanese automotive brand. Based primarily in the United States, it has been in operation since 1986. Besides the U.S., they also sold cars in Mexico, Canada, Panama, and Kuwait. Honda planned to launch this brand in the Japanese homeland in mid mid-2000s. However, it didn't eventuate due to the financial crisis of 2007-08. Hence, used Acura RSX engine enjoys maximum traction in the United States.
In its peak years, the brand competed with BMW and Mercedes Benz in the luxury segment of U.S. markets. The 'Acu' in Acura, is a Latin term loosely translated to being mechanically precise. Their logo styling, the Calipher indicates precision and accuracy. They first brought Honda's VTEC into U.S. automotive markets. Also, it inspired Japanese automakers to launch their luxury brand in the U.S. For instance, Toyota launched their Lexus and Nissan launched their Infinit marquees.
The fourth generation Integra was introduced as the Acura RSX in the United States. It features the K-Series, a new engine altogether. It came in two models in the United States - RSX and RSX Type S. The Type S featured the K20A2 engine from 2002 to 2004. Whereas, the 2005 and 2006 RSX Type S featured the K20Z1 engine. RSX is sold as the Honda Integra in the Far Eastern, where Acura doesn't exist. Being an Integra itself, Honda discontinued this series altogether in June 2006. Honda discontinued after selling the final 300 units since coupes were becoming unpopular. Owing to customer requests, they made 150 more Integras. Later, RSX was dropped since it was not well suited to Acura's updated marketing strategy. In turn, it converted TSX to Acura's entry-level model. Later, the equally powerful and affordable 2006 Honda Civic Si filled the vacuum created by RSX.
During the early 2000s, Honda decided to change names from recognizable names like 'Integra' and 'Legend' to the likes of RSX to build recognition around the Accua marque. The RSX came with a long list of features including cruise control, power windows, power moonroof, and 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Also, the RSX used a DOHC, VTEC, 4-cylinder K20A3 engine. With a displacement of 2 Liter, it produced a horsepower of 160 hp. The customer had two transmission options - a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed automatic. Along with Sequential SportShift and Grade Logic Control, it proved well in the U.S. automotive markets. From 2002 to 2004, RSX Type S offered a horsepower of 200 hp. In 2005, they replaced it with a more powerful 210 hp K20Z1 engine. Moreover, the Type S came fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission. It offered additional features including the sport-tuned suspension and much more.
K series is a combination of 4-cylinder and 4-cylinder. This engine was introduced in 2001. Equipped with DOHC valvetrains, they used roller rockers on the cylinder head to eliminate friction. Moreover, it uses a coil-on-plug, along with a distributorless ignition system, using a coil for each spark plug. Also, they have 2 short blocks of the same design. What differentiates the K Series from the B Series is the deck height. The K20 engine employs a short block with a deck height of 8.3'.However, the K23 and K24 block features a deck height of 9.1'. Its system overlooks the use of a conventional distributor-based ignition timing system. It is done to favor the automated system facilitating the ECU to control ignition timings, through sensor inputs. In addition, the cylinders use cast iron sleeves, similar to the B Series and F Series. It contrasted heavily with the FRM cylinders in the H Series and also the newer F series, which featured in the Honda S2000.
K20A3 Besides the 2002–2006 Acura RSX, the K20A3 also featured in the 2002–2005 Honda Civic, 2002–2005 Honda Civic, 2002–2005 Honda Civic Type S EDM, and 2003–2006 Honda Civic 2.0 i-VTEC (SEA). The 2002–2006 Acura RSX used a compression ratio of 9:8:1. Its engine pumped out 160 horses @ 6500 RPM and 193 Nm of torque @ 4000 RPM.
