Let’s look into the evolution of Dodge as a brand, in terms of engines and transmissions.

Manual Transmission Models

Dodge debuted with their 3-speed manual transmissions as early as 1914. In 1917, their Model 30 used a 3.4 L engine which pumped a decent 35 hp. The car raced to a top speed of 50 mph. In 1927, their fast four used a similar 3.4 L engine which pulled a meagre 24 hp. The D5 series of 1937 used a slightly bigger 3.5 L engine which pumped out horsepower of 87 hp. Later, the D19, a custom series pulled off 91 hp, with similar engine displacement. Dodge hit the 100 hp mark with their 1946 D24S, Deluxe Series. Its 3.7 L engine produced a horsepower of 102 hp, translating to 75 kW. The 1949 Coronet (1st Gen) hit 103 hp with its 3.7 L engine. This was the final model before Dodge started using automatic transmissions. The engine powered the vehicle to a top speed of 81 mph. Moreover, fitted to a 3-speed manual transmission, the car did 0 to 60 mph in just over 25 seconds. Dodge got some of the premium Chrysler engines around in the 1940s and 1950s.

Automatic transmission models

The 3-speed automatic fitted MeadowBook continued on 103 hp of horsepower. It continued in their 1949 Wayfarer, which again used a 3-speed automatic. While reverting to a 3-speed manual transmission, the 1953 Coronet (2nd Gen) pumped up 140 hp. It reached a top speed of 98 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in just 14.4 seconds. This manually fitted model in the era of automatics helped push Dodge on lines of power and performance. Later, Dodge employed a 2-speed automatic in their 1954 Royal (1st Gen) model. With an engine displacement of 3854 cc, it pumped out over 150 hp of power. It resulted in a top speed of 98 mph and achieved 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 14.2 seconds. Using the same type of transmission, the 1955 Coronet (3rd Gen) reached top speeds above 100 mph and did a 0 to 60 in just 13.5 seconds. Its 4.4 L engine produced a massive horsepower of 175 hp. Later, the 4.4 L engine in 1955 LA Femme manufactured an incredible 183 hp. Also, the 1956 Mayfair proved a powerhouse, with its 4.2 L engine pumping out 175 hp.

Dodge Hemi Engine

Dodge introduced the Chrysler Hemi engine as a Red Ram in 1953. Similarly, the hemi versions of Dodge Trucks carried the name – PowerDome. They didn’t have a V8 before developing one specifically for their downsized cars. It has a uniquely shorter bore center distance for any Hemi engine. Also, the Dodge Hemi didn’t share the same dimensions as other Chrysler or DeSoto Hemi engines. They were distinct from the Plymouth A engines too. They had four different variants of Hemi engines for Dodge lineups – 241, 270, 315, and 325 (names representing engine displacements). Dodge Hemi is a prized series, making a mark for the models and lineups. The 270 in higher trims is dubbed as the Super Red Ram, which used a 4-barrel carburetor producing 193 hp.
