Used Ford Cougar Engine Years

Used Ford Cougar Engine

Ford is the most iconic car brand not just in the United States, but worldwide. They are part of the big three headquartered in Detroit. Founded by Henry Ford in 1903, it quickly gained an international presence. They transformed the automotive production process into an 'assembly line' production model. This is commonly dubbed as Fordism in the industry. Nevertheless, Ford gracefully aged into the post-Fordism era as well. They splurge funds and spend years behind research and development. Every Ford engine is built on the back of this research and development. It defines the worth of the used Ford Cougar engine.

Ford Cougar

Ford Cougar is a D-segment coupe sold in the European market from 1998 to 2002. Also, it sold in North America from 1999 to 2002 as the Mercury Cougar. There were deliberations to make it the third-generation Probe. Nevertheless, the rationalization of the coupe in the U.S. caused the name change to Cougar. It sports a coupe and liftback look. Designed by Darrell Behmer, they assembled these models in Flat Rock, Michigan, United States. The 2-door coupe used a front-engine and front-wheel drive layout. The model replaced the Ford Probe and led the way for the fourth-generation Ford Mustang.

Ford Cougar Engines

Cougar featured either the 2 L 16-valve Zetec or the 2.5 L 24-valve Duratec V6. The latter came with both manual and automatic transmission options. The 2.0 L Zetec uses a 4-cylinder and 16-valve configuration. With a displacement of 1988 cc, it pumped out 129 hp @ 5,600 RPM and 178 Nm of torque @ 4,000 RPM. The engine did 0 to 100 mph in just 10.3 seconds. Also, it reached the top speed of 130 mph. It recorded CO2 emissions of 202 g/km.

The 2.5 L Duratec engine is a V6, 24-valve engine. It pumped out horsepower and torque of 168 hp @ 6,250 RPM and 220 Nm @ 4,250 RPM respectively. Fitted with a manual transmission, the engine reached a top speed of 140 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in just 8.6 seconds. Similarly, automatic cars raced to a top speed of 128 mph and did 0 to 60 mph in just 10.4 seconds. The recorded CO2 emissions were 228 g/km and 240 g/km in manual and automatic transmissions.

Cougar in Europe

Ford attempted to reintroduce a sports coupe in Europe. It wanted to recreate the same magic associated with the long-discontinued Capri. Similar to Capri being based in Cortina, Cougar based itself on the Mondeo, a large family car of the time. Cougars sold in Europe from December 1998. The cars destined for European markets were assembled at the Koln plant in Germany. It was where the European specification lighting was installed. Also, the car is known as the Ford Cougar in Europe and Australia. Ford branded the same car as the Mercury Cougar in the United States. Such cougars were both built and sold in the U.S.

Ford unveiled this car at the British Grand Prix in July 1998. The commercials had Dennis Hooper, who starred in Easy Rider flick as well. The commercial also shared the 1968 Steppenwolf's song, 'Born to be Wild' played in the film. The Cougar retired from Europe in August 2002, after its withdrawal from Britain in February 2001. More than 12,000 units were sold in the United Kingdom. Cougar entered the Australian markers in October 1999, featuring a 2.5 L 24-valve Duratec V6 engine. The sales went on up until March 2004. Hence, the used Ford Cougar engine enjoys traction not only in the U.S. but worldwide.
