Ford attempted to reintroduce a sports coupe in Europe. It wanted to recreate the same magic associated with the long-discontinued Capri. Similar to Capri being based in Cortina, Cougar based itself on the Mondeo, a large family car of the time. Cougars sold in Europe from December 1998. The cars destined for European markets were assembled at the Koln plant in Germany. It was where the European specification lighting was installed. The commercial also shared the 1968 Steppenwolf's song, 'Born to be Wild' played in the film. The Cougar retired from Europe in August 2002, after its withdrawal from Britain in February 2001. More than 12,000 units were sold in the United Kingdom. Cougar entered the Australian markers in October 1999, featuring a 2.5 L 24-valve Duratec V6 engine. The sales went on up until March 2004.
