Ford Probe

Ford Probe is a liftback coupe from Ford. Introduced in 1998, Ford produced it up until 1997. Moreover, Ford collaborated with Mazda to bring about this model. All generations of Probe are based on the front-wheel drive Mazda G platform. It was the same platform that underpinned the Mazda Capella. It replaced the Ford EXP and led the way to the Ford Cougar. Derived from the Mazda MX-6, it occupied the Capri's niche space in Europe. Also, it was intended as the fourth-generation Ford Mustang in the United States.

It competed with the likes of Acura Integra, Isuzu Piazza, Nissan 200SX, and Toyota Celica. Designed by Jack Telnack, it was assembled in the AAI plant in Michigan. Motor Trend magazine named the Ford Probe GT as the 1993 Car of the Year. Also, it was in the Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best lists for 1989, 1993, and 1994. In the NASCAR Dash Series in 1990, 1990 Ford Probe recorded a speed of 166 mph. It set a new and still maintains track record at Daytona International Speedway. It is the fasted closed course lap for a non-turbo, 4-cylinder engine.

First Generation Probe

The first generation Probe featured three different engines - Mazda F2, Mazda F2T, and Ford Vulcan. Both Mazdas are 3-valve, inline-4 SOHC engines with a displacement of 2.2 L. The F2 pumped out 110 horses @ 4,700 RPM and 176 Nm of torque @ 3,000 RPM. Similarly, the F2T produced 145 horses @ 4,300 RPM and 258 Nm of torque @ 3,500 RPM. The former reached a top speed of 113 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds, while it raced to a top speed of 131 mph and accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds. The Ford Vulcan engine managed 145 horses and pumped 224 Nm of torque @ 3,400 RPM.

Second Generation Probe

The second generation Probe used a 2.0 L Mazda FS inline-4 and 2.5 L Mazda KL-DE V6 engine. Both of these are 4-valve DOHC engines. The FS and KL-DE engines offered compression ratios of 9.0:1 and 9.2:1 respectively. The 2.0 L inline-4 pumped out 118 horses and 172.2 Nm of torque @ 4,500 RPM respectively. It raced to a top speed of 113 mph and accelerated from a standstill to 60 mph in under 10 seconds. The 2.5 V6 engine produced horsepower and torque of 164 horses and 216.9 Nm of torque @ 4,800 RPM respectively.

Third Generation Probe

Ford proposed the third-generation Probe. It was intended to be released in mid-1998 as the 1990 model. Rather, things took an interesting turn as it became the 1999 Mercury Cougar.
