In addition, they used the Oakville Assembly plant in Canada and the Cuautitlán Assembly plant in Mexico. The compact car used either a front-engine, front-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive layout.

First Generation Tempo

The first generation Ford Tempo went into production from 1983 to 1987 for the model years between 1984 to 1987. Using either a 2-door or 4-door sedan type, it is related to the Ford Escort and Mercury Lynx. It comes with multiple trims - entry-level L models, mid-range GL model, GLX luxury model, 1986 LX, and 1987 AWD. Interestingly, it was unveiled on the deck of the USS Intrepid. The first generation Tempo opened up to annual sales of over 400k units in 1984. The first generation sold 318k coupes and almost a million sedans, tallying up to 1.3 million units sold in the United States. 

Second Generation Tempo

The second-generation Ford Tempo went into production from 1988 to 1994. Using either a 2-door or 4-door sedan type, it is related to the Ford Escort and Mercury Lynx. It comes with multiple trims - entry-level L models, mid-range GL models, luxury LX, performance-oriented GLS and AWD. The second generation Tempo opened up to annual sales of over a whopping 363k units in 1988. The second-generation Tempo sold over 1.5 million units in the United States alone. More than 206k coupes and 1.35 million sedans were sold globally. 

Ford Tempo Engines

First-generation Ford Tempo used the 4-cylinder 2.3 L gasoline engine as the standard. Also, they offered the optional 2.0 L Mazda diesel engine. Till 1985, they offered a 4-speed manual transmission as the standard. Later, the 5-speed was mainstreamed in the model. Around that time, the engine also got its new central fuel injection (CFI) system. The Mazda-built engine added the much-preferred diesel option. Later, the second generation Tempo offered the 2.3 L inline-4 engine as the standard. As an added option, they also offered the 3.0 L Vulcan V6. The Vulcan V6 was introduced as an option for GL and LX trims. Also, it served as the standard engine on the GLS.
