Delivering modernity, it proved the most powerful and efficient Jaguar engine of its time. In its supercharged 4 L form, it returned 370 hp, much more than the V12s it replaced. Daimler V8

Albeit, not a Jaguar engine, the brand inherited this powerful V8 in 1960. Despite its limited application, it has had a lasting effect. The engine debuted in 1959, a year before Jaguar took over this engine. Turner, the developer of this V8 enjoyed a career for the most part in the motorcycle industry. Hence, he came up with a V8 returning compact dimensions, lesser weight, and great output. With a displacement of meager 2.5 Litres, the Diamler V8 pumped out a horsepower of up to 140 hp. Fitted with twin SUs, it boasts a strong build in its time. With a small displacement for an 8-cylinder engine, it was popular for smoothness in revving.

V12

Jaguar intended the V12 for racing purposes in the 1960s. However, such development didn’t take place for many reasons. It then settled for more powerful road-going engines. Also, it can compete with the V8, which dominated the U.S. market during that time. The V12 is popular for its smooth power delivery, which helped it become the premium engine option. With 2 overhead camshafts and 5.3L displacement, it produced 272 hp in the Series 3 E type. The final enlarged model with a 6 L displacement, when fitted with fuel injection, produced up to 315 hp.

XK

The XK engine was fitted to a production car four decades after its debut. It’s a testament to its supreme design and top-notch calibration. That alone doesn’t explain the superiority of this engine. Its history dates back to World War days when William Lyons and his crew designed the first house-in design of Jaguar. It came with twin overhead camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers. Moreover, the XK units are one of the high-tech power plants of the time. The engine debuted in the 1948 XK120 Super sports, as the fastest production car of the time. Later, Jaguar fitted this gem of an engine on the 1950 Mk VII saloon. Subsequently, XK became a go-to choice in Jaguar models for the next four decades, including the iconic E-type, Mark 2, and XJ models.
