Jaguar, a British carmaker sells luxury vehicles worldwide. Land Rover has owned the brand entirely since 2013. They have had many mergers in the past, such as with the Standard Motor Company and British Motor Corporation. The brand was listed on the London Stock Exchange in the eighties. However, Ford acquired this brand in 1990. Interestingly, they make vehicles for the Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom. The 2010 XJ is the most recent prime ministerial car from Jaguar. If that ain’t royal enough, they held royal warrants from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles. Ford once owned both Land Rover and Jaguar, before selling both to Tata Motors. Then, Tata Motors created the subsidiary holding company, the Jaguar Land Rover. The latter announced transitioning to an electric vehicle-only production model by 2025. Nevertheless, the used Jaguar engine from the previous model is still worth in gold.
The brand has brought some interesting combinations in terms of car components. Therein, they return some of the top specifications known in the auto industry. Let us look at the evolution of various engine series from Jaguar.
The idea of AJ6 originated when the XK engines showed their age in the eighties. Later, they decided to go with straight 6 engines, the modern V12s of today. The Jaguar came up with two displacements in straight sixes. You had the 2.9 L half V12 and the 3.6 L, upgraded with a 24 V twin cam head. The latter debuted in the XJ-S models in 1983. Subsequently, the AJ6s were fitted to the CJ40 since its release in 1986. It proved as the powerhouse for the rest of the century, on the back of upgrades and displacement changes. Being a refined successor of XK, AJ6 offered more of an evolution than a revolution.
Jaguar decided to go with AJV8 after factoring in the recent trend for compact engines. AJV8 is the time, they refrained from having 6-cylinders in a row since World War II. Delivering modernity, it proved the most powerful and efficient Jaguar engine of its time. In its supercharged 4 L form, it returned 370 hp, much more than the V12s it replaced. Also, it quickly became Jaguar’s new halo engine and remains in production to date. The AJV8 features in the Jaguar XJ and F-type models.
Albeit, not a Jaguar engine, the brand inherited this powerful V8 in 1960. Despite its limited application, it has had a lasting effect. The engine debuted in 1959, a year before Jaguar took over this engine. Turner, the developer of this V8 enjoyed a career for the most part in the motorcycle industry. Hence, he came up with a V8 returning compact dimensions, lesser weight, and great output. With a displacement of meager 2.5 Litres, the Diamler V8 pumped out a horsepower of up to 140 hp. Fitted with twin SUs, it boasts a strong build in its time. With a small displacement for an 8-cylinder engine, it was popular for smoothness in revving.
Jaguar intended the V12 for racing purposes in the 1960s. However, such development didn’t take place for many reasons. It then settled for more powerful road-going engines. Also, it can compete with the V8, which dominated the U.S. market during that time. The V12 is popular for its smooth power delivery, which helped it become the premium engine option. With 2 overhead camshafts and 5.3L displacement, it produced 272 hp in the Series 3 E type. The final enlarged model with a 6 L displacement, when fitted with fuel injection, produced up to 315 hp.
The XK engine was fitted to a production car four decades after its debut. It’s a testament to its supreme design and top-notch calibration. That alone doesn’t explain the superiority of this engine. Its history dates back to World War days when William Lyons and his crew designed the first house-in design of Jaguar. It came with twin overhead camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers. Moreover, the XK units are one of the high-tech power plants of the time. The engine debuted in the 1948 XK120 Super sports, as the fastest production car of the time. Later, Jaguar fitted this gem of an engine on the 1950 Mk VII saloon. Subsequently, XK became a go-to choice in Jaguar models for the next four decades, including the iconic E-type, Mark 2, and XJ models.
