However, it wasn’t enough to warrant a distinct model affordable to the European markets. Chevrolet Trans Sport and Opel were the successors of this brand. Also, Alero sold good numbers in some European countries and even Israel during 1991-2001. It again sold under the Chevrolet label and as a four-door sedan. Interestingly, it still flaunted the Oldsmobile badge, albeit selling under the Chevrolet label. GM Daewoo sourced Epica and replaced Alero in select countries in Europe and Israel. Since most European countries don’t recognize badging, they added Chevy badges to the grille and real post-2000 for Alera, which was selling there.

Oldsmobile V8 engine

Oldsmobile V8, commonly dubbed as the Rocket is an iconic engine from OldsMobile. Along with the 1949 Cadiallac V8, they helped build a brand reputation for Oldsmobile. For decades, the company built its own family of V8 engines. Only in the 90s, they started adopting Chevy’s 350 small bloc and Cadiallac’s Northstar engine. All of them employed a 90-degree bank angle and shared the most uniform dimensions of 87.33 mm for Rocket. For later generations, they used 93.66mm in Gen 1 and 86 mm in Gen 2.

Small blocs define the smaller cu in engines of different liter variants. With higher deck height, V8 accommodates a 108mm stroke crank for higher displacement. Big blocks are these taller deck models, which are an inch taller and one and a half inches wider than small blocks. Dubiously, Rocket V8 was the first mass-produced OHV 8 before 1950. Interestingly, Oldsmobiles painted their small blocks in gold or blue, and big blocks in red, green, and bronze. It had a cast-iron cylinder block and cylinder head.

Oldsmobile ended its Generation II production in 1990. It devolved into its later vehicle, the Oldsmobile Aurora, powered by a V8 engine. It took huge inspiration from Cathe diallac NNorthstarEngine. This 4 Liter DOHC design was branded as the Aurora. The engine had four valves per cylinder. Besides Aurora, the engine also featured in Shelby Series I. From the fifties to the seventies, each GM division employed a V8 family of its own. Profitably, they were shared between divisions to improve interoperability and bring down repair and maintenance costs.
