Acura is a luxury division of Japanese automaker Honda. It is based primarity in United States. Acu in Latin loosely translates to mechanical precision. They have been in operations since 1986. Though, their parent company is in Japan, they never sold cars in the homeland. They planned to launch their models in Japan post mid-2000s. However, it didn't eventuate due to the financial crisis of 2007-08.

The brand outsold top luxury brands in the United States including the likes of BMW, Benz. Even after falling sales in the 1990s, it revived since the 2000s. It's success inspired the likes of Toyota and Nissan to launched their luxury divisions such as Lexus and Infinit. The logo indicated a calipher, expressing the focus on mechanical precision in these machines.

Acura CL

Acura marketed their midsize GT from 1996 to 2003. It replaced the iconic Acura Legend coupe. Acura assembled the cat at their plant in East Liberty, Ohio. The car is based on the second-generation TL and the Honda Accord, built at Honda's plant in Marysville, Ohio. Hence, it is an all-American car, if not for Honda. Moreover, it is the first Acura to be built in U.S territory. Using a transverse engined CL, it behaved much like a TL Coupe. Acura CL sold in good numbers in the United States. It opened out to annual sales of over 16k units in the opening year of 1996. It sold over 25k units annually in 1997-1998. Later, it sold over 20 k units annually in 1999-2000. The Acura CL spanned two generations from 1996 to 2003.

First Generation CL

The first generation was in production from 1996 to 1999 for model years of 1997 to 1999. It featured either a 3-liter J30 V6 pumping out 200 horses or a 2.2-liter inline-4 engine. The later models in 1998 and 1999 featured a 2.3 L 4-cylinder engine pumping out 150 horses. In terms of transmissions, the Acura CL featured either a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission. The automatic transmission is offered to serve the liking of U.S. car owners. The later models of 1998 and 1999, using the 2.3 L 4-cylinder had the manual transmission option for the hot rod enthusiasts.

Second Generation CL

The second generation Acura CL was in production from January 2000 to 2003 for the model years of 2001 to 2003. It was designed by Donald Herner, Harumi Okano, and Kunihiko Tachibana in 1997. The 2001 model employed the 3.2 SOHC VTEC J Series V6 engine pumping out 225 horses. Later, the version with Type-S trim boasted 260 horses. Type S proved the most powerful FWD Honda of its time. The earlier models used a 5-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, the 2003 CL Type-S used the close ration 6-speed manual transmission, with a helical limited-slip differential. As a 6-speed CL, it deleted some of the interior features of the automatic model.

6-speed Acura CL

Only a handful of manual transmission models were produced. A total of 3,514 models were made for the U.S. markets, with 2690 without navigation and 824 with navigation. In addition, they produced 331 cars for the Canadian market, all without navigation. The 6-speed car was revered by critics, calling it the top-performing Acura besides NSX and Integra Type-R. Hence, the CL's manual transmission survived till the third-generation TL and seventh-generation Honda Accord.
