Used Daihatsu Transmission Models

Used Daihatsu Transmission

Daihatsu is a combination of kanji characters, with its first character meaning engines. Their logo, the right-rounded D' stands for speed, progress, and power. It is amongst the oldest surviving Japanese car engine manufacturers. They are renowned for producing three-wheelers and off-roaders. Also, the company produces many lineups of kei cars, which have become its avatar today. In the U.S., they were competent in selling small cars. They supply to overseas countries under the Toyota brand. Moreover, they are a wholly-owned subsidiary of the latter since 2016. Interestingly, Daihatsu contributes to 4% of the overall sales from Toyota Group. In the U.S. used Daihatsu transmission and engine are still in demand. Daihatsu car owners are needing them and also other car owners, who prefer cheaper transmissions showing interest in them. Let's look at some of their line-ups and transmission models.

Daihatsu in the U.S.A

Diahatsus arrived in the U.S. by the late 80s. They marketed their models in U.S. territory till 1992. During its short stint, it took the hit of recessions in the 90s. As a compact car, the models had very little impact due to the recession and stiffening competition. Interestingly, the fuel economy didn't appeal to the U.S. customer perception at the time. However, the Charade and Rocky models were introduced and sold in significant numbers. In 1987, the brand also sold its Hijet in the U.S. territory. It served quite well as an off-roader as well as a utility vehicle. With headquarters in California. it did some business.

Currently, Diahatsu's U.S. headquarters has turned into the location of Timken Bearing Inspection Inc. In partnership with other North American players, Diahatsu planned to operate an assembly plant for Charade in Canada. Due to the nature of the partnership, they aimed to build smaller versions of Bombardier designs, which were to be marketed in North America. Due to business reasons, this plan didn't eventually eventuate. Post exit from the U.S., Toyota, who had controlling interests in the brand, continued with the after-sales service for thousands of Diahatsu customers in the United States up until 2002.

Daihatsu Charade

Only the third-generation Charade is sold in the United States. It sold for over 5 years from 1988 to 1992. Albeit, a solid, tight construction and impressive styling, it didn't draw good dales. Higher pricing and fewer dealerships ruined the business end of things. Low performance including a 0 to 60 in 15 seconds didn't resonate with the U.S. aspirations. The rough-running three-cylinder was seen as a setback too. Toyota had to retire the brand after the 1992 model year. In the United States, Daihatsu Charade was available in just two body types 3-door hatchbacks and 4-door sedans.

Both the petrol and diesel variants were available. Among the petrol engines, there were a few options including 993 cc I3 (G100), 993 cc 6-valve SOHC turbo I3 (G100), 993 cc 12-valve DOHC turbo I3 (G100), and 1295 cc I4 (G102/112). Among diesel engines, the options include 993 cc I3 (G101, hatchback) and 993 cc turbo-diesel I3 (G101, hatchback). The Daihatsu charade came with a 4-speed manual transmission, 5-speed manual transmission, and 3-speed Aisin Warner A210 automatic. Daihatsu categorizes the Charade as a supermini to differentiate it from the smaller Japanese kei cars.

Daihatsu Rocky (F300)

Besides Charade, Daihatsu Rocky is the only other Daihatsu model to sell in the U.S. Its brief presence meant a few sales, though not competitive enough. Rocky came with both the 1.6 L C14 engine and 1.6 L E 14 engine options. It came with a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission. With a body type of 3-door SUV, it should have been popular here. However stiff competition from other brands and the recession of the 90s didn't help its launch. Daihatsu classified Rocky as a mini SUV to differentiate it from their other models. It featured both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. In both the drive layouts, it featured front engine settings. A wheelbase of 85.6 inches heightened the off-roading experience in the United States.

Rocky's nameplate can still be seen in the U.S. It was succeeded by the Terios in 1997 in non-U.S. markets. The SOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder was a perfect setup for petrol engines in the U.S. Rocky old under three hundred units in 1989 and its sales peaked at meagre 4354 units in 1990. By 1991, the sales dropped to 2761, after which the model, as well as the brand, went defunct in the U.S.A. by 1992. Nevertheless, the Rocky transmission is still a useful commodity, which is very relevant in today's used automotive markets.
