Used Fiat Transmission

Used Fiat Transmission is still popular in the U.S. today. Let's look at the evolution of this all-American brand through the lens of its transmission models.

3-speed Manual Transmission

Fiat began with a 3-speed manual transmission in 1899. The 1899 Fiat 4 HP featured a 679 cc engine pumping out 42 hp. That is when the evolution of one of the biggest automotive brands began. Then, the 6 HP continued on the 3-speed manual during the turn of the century, with the 1 L engine pumping up over 101 hp. The 8 HP, 10 HP, and 12 HP models continued on the same transmission, which improved engine capacity, horsepower, and top speeds. Nevertheless, these are cars that will find their place in a museum today.

It was in 1903, that Fiat upped their transmission model to a 4-speed manual 1903, 24-32 HP. With bulky 6 L engines, these behaved like large carts. Even bulkier carriages such as 16-24 HP and 60 HP were built in the year 1903. The first car-like vehicle (at least visually) happened in 1910, in the form of Tipo 2, which again used the 4-speed manual transmission.

4-speed Manual Transmission

The 1936 508 S had a proper car-like look in the early Fiat models. Using a 4-speed manual, its 1.5 L engine pumped out 45 hp. It can reach top speeds of above 70 mph. Fiat followed it with the 508 C Balilla 1100 and 500 Topolino in 1937. By 1950, Fiat recorded a 0 to 60 mph acceleration in under 37 seconds, through the Fiat 1400. Its first coupe car, the 1100 Zogato Couple could pull off a 0 to 6 in just 23 seconds, considered a big feat in 1950. The Jeep like Campagnola 1101 was launched in 1951.

The iconic 850 Spider did a 0 to 60 in under 17 seconds in 1965, producing top speeds of above 90 mph. The 1966 Fiat 124 did a 0 to 60 in under 16 seconds and the 124 Coup'e 1500 improved it in under 13.5 seconds, the same year. Even better, the 124 Spider 1400 topped it up by doing a 0 to 60 in just 12.5 seconds in 1966. However, there were always limitations inherent to a 4-speed manual transmission.

5-speed Manual Transmission

Finally, Dino Spider did a 0 to 60 in just 8.2 seconds for Fiat in 1966. Powered by a 5-speed manual transmission, it produced top speeds of over 131 mph. Eventually, Fiat continued with a 5-speed manual transmission model in this 1500 Cabriolet in 1967. The Dino Coup'e released in the same year pushed for 0 to 60 in under 9 seconds and reached top speeds of 131 mph, thanks largely to its 5-speed manual transmission model.

Later, Fiat released another 5-speed manual drivetrain coupe in 1969, the 124 Coup'e 1600. With a 1.6 L engine, it pumped out horsepower of over 109 hp. The convertible, the 1969 124 Spider 1600 continued with the 5-speed manual drive train. It accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 10.3 seconds. Some of the top models with 4-speed manual drivetrain continued on the sideless, with the 1969 128 Saloon, 850 Sport Spider, 850 Super Berlina, and 128 Familiarre being some of the classic examples.

0-60 mph in under 10 seconds

On the racing side, Fiat launched the 1976 131 Abarth which did a 0 to 60 acceleration in 8.2 seconds. It reached top speeds of 118 mph with its 5-speed manual transmission. Its 2 L engine can produce a horsepower of 138 hp. The modest-looking 1976 143 1800 ES can even pull off a 0 to 60 in 11.2 seconds and reach top speeds of over 105 mph. However, Fiat continued to produce low-priced models such as the 1976 147 with a capable 1 L engine and 4-speed manual parallely.

Similarly, they continued on the 127 lineups with a 2nd series of its own with sub 1 L engines and 4-speed manual transmission. It was the time First Gen Fiorino was introduced, again with a sub 1 L engine and 4-speed manual transmission. Also, the civil-looking models such as the Mirafiori Sport launched in 1978 proved as worthy counterparts in the 5- 5-speed manual drivetrain segment. It was in the late 70s, that the 124 Spider 2000 also appeared as a luxury vehicle.

5-speed automatic transmission

Fiat's 5-speed automatic transmission debuted in this millennium. The Fiat Punto released in 2003, featured a 5-speed automatic transmission. With a 1.2 L engine, it pulled up to 59 hp and reached top speeds of 96 mph. From 2004 to 2006, Fiat released many 5-speed manual budget cars including the Panda 4 x 4, Multipla 2nd Gen, Croma 2nd Gen, Sedici, Grande Punto, Panda 100 HP, etc& The Linea released as an elongated sedan in 2007 featured a 5-speed manual transmission model. Interestingly, Bravo (second generation) featured a 6-speed manual transmission, which got the car to top speeds of above 110 mph. The sporty Abarth reached top speeds of 127 mph with just its 5-speed manual transmission and accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in under 8 seconds. The 2000 Fiat 500 C accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 11 seconds with its 6-speed manual.

Fiat revisited automatic transmission in 2013 OTIMA which featured a 7-speed automatic. The Fullback released in 2016 used a 5-speed automatic. With its 2.5 L engine, it pumped a horsepower of 181 hp. It reached top speeds of 110 mph and did a 0 to 60 in around 10 seconds. The 2016 Fiat Toro used a 6-speed automatic transmission, racing from 0 to 60 in 12.8 seconds and reaching top speeds of 107 mph as a semi-pickup vehicle. Additionally, Fiat used a 6-speed automatic once again in its 2016 Fiat 124 Spider, which raced from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.5 seconds. As a cool convertible, it reached a top speed of 134 mph. The 2017 Fiat Argo also used the 6-speed automatic transmission, with its 1.7 L engine pulling up a horsepower of 130 bhp.
