Mazda or Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese car maker based in the city of Hiroshima. Founded in 1920, they started making vehicles since 1931. The name, Mazda refers to the Zoroastrian god of the same name, known as the god of harmony and wisdom. They are known for innovating the industry, especially their Wankel engine, Kodo design language, and SkyActiv platform. Additionally, they have a long track record in motor racing, including victories in 24 Hours of Le Mans, with their Mazda 787B in 1991. Through the years they made many tech-based alliances and business partnerships with other top brands including Isuzu, Suzuki, Toyota, Nissan, and Ford. Hence, the used Mazda transmission means a lot to car enthusiasts in the U.S. and elsewhere too. Mazda arrived in the U.S. around the time, other Japanese cars were also popular here. However, Mazda didn't attempt to narrow it down into a compact car division.
Mazda debuted in the automobile industry with the 1931 Mazdago. They got into trucks in the fifties with their 1958 Romper and 1959 D1100 and D1500. They used a 3-speed manual transmission for the first time with the 1958 K360. A series of pickup trucks such as the 1959 R 360 made use of the 3-speed manual transmission. Later, they used a 4-speed manual transmission in their car, the 1960 R360. The semi-truck B1500 released the following year, confirmed their trend of using 4-speed manual transmission. The sub 1.5 L engine pumped a horsepower of 59 bhp, adequate to pull its weight of over just a ton. The B360 pickup in 1961, P360 of 1962, P600 of 1962, and Familia 800 Estate (First Generation) of 1963 used the 4-speed manual transmission while improving on engine capacity, horsepower, speed, and acceleration. The 1964 Familia pulled off 0 to 60 in just over 24 seconds.
Mazda got into a 5-speed manual transmission for the first time with the 1968 Boxer. However, it soon followed a range of vehicles in 4-speed manual again, including the 1969 Luce Rotary sedan and 1971 Savanna sedan, which reached a top speed of 96 mph and did a 0 to 60 in just over 12 seconds. The 4-speed manual featured in the 1971 Grand Familia as well, which bragged a top speed crossing 109 mph and did a 0 to 60 acceleration in just 9.5 seconds. 5-speed manual transmissions made a comeback in the 1974 Rotary Pickup, in which the 1975 Roadpacer ventured into the 3-speed automatic transmission segment. Also, the Cosmo Second Generation of 1975, a prominent vehicle from their lineup confirmed the trend of a 5-speed manual transmission powered powertrain. Ultimately, the 5-speed manual transmission found its place even in the newer Mazda models up to even the 1992 RX-7, which does a 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds.
The 2005 Scrum (4th Gen) made use of the 6-speed manual transmission. Later, the 2006 CX-7 made use of the transmission. Its 2.25 L engine pumped an impressive horsepower of 235 hp. It raced from 0 to 60 in under 8 seconds. The 5-door hatchback reached a top speed of 139 mph, thereby proving as a sporty vehicle. Similarly, the 2006 CX 9 made use of the 6-speed automatic, powering itself by a 3.7 L engine, producing horsepower of 274 hp. Even better, Titan (6th Gen) made use of a similar transmission. The truck used a 3 L engine which produced horsepower in the range of upper 130s. The 2007 Tribued (2nd Gen) is the first Mazda vehicle to use a 6-speed automatic transmission. Later the 2008 RX-8 (2nd Gen) bettered it with its sporty configurations. The sedan reached a top speed of a whopping 141 mph and did a 0 to 60 mph in just 7.2 seconds. The BT 50 (2nd Gen) launched in 2010 again used the 6-speed manual transmission, followed by the 2012 Mazdag (3rd Gen), which ensured a 0 to 60 in under 10 seconds. That has been the story of Mazda till 2010. They launched decently sporty vehicles mostly featuring the 5-speed and 6-speed manual and a taste of automatic transmissions.
Mazda used a CVT transmission model in their 2012 Flair wagon (1st gen). The 2013 Flair Wagon (2nd gen) uses the CVT as well. Mazda introduced the sports car Mazda 6 Skyactiv-D GX in 2013. The model featured a 6-speed sequential transmission. CVT again starred in the 2014 Flair crossover. Similarly, the 2017 Flair (2nd Gen) employed the CVT, as did the 2017 Familia van. Mazda released the 6-speed sequential powered race car again in 2017 RT24 P. In 2019, Mazda made extensive use of the 6-speed automatic transmission again in their flagship models 2019 Mazda (4th Gen) and 2019 CX-30.
