Acura Legend

The Acura Legend is a mid-size luxury sedan sold in the U.S. from 1985 to 1995. Also, it is classified as a full-size car and a coupe as well. It is the first flagship sedan sold under the Acura nameplate. The lineup continued till the model was renamed the Acura 3.5 RL. It was seen as the U.S. version of the KA9 series Honda Legend. The car was launched against the backdrop of Japanese imports becoming popular in the United States.

The initial success of Acura inspired Toyota and Nissan to launch their Lexus and Infiniti brands respectively. The luxury market segment was dominated by Japanese imports more than ever. The Acura Legend came with a body style of 2-door coupe and 4-door coupe. The Legend was later replaced by the Acura RL and Acura CL (Coupe). Also, called the Honda Legend outside the United States, the models were assembled in Saitama, Japan. It sold over 25k units in its launch year of 1986 and the sales increased drastically in later years.

First Generation Legend

Honda introduced the Legend in the United States with its 1986 model year to be slated as its top-of-the-line model in the Acura marquee. Initially, the sedans came out first, packed with 151 horses over power on the back of a 2.5 V6 engine. Later, the coupes announced itself in 1987, powered by 161 horses on the back of 2.7 L engines. Also, sedans got a new and improved engine in 1988.

The Sedan used the engine with C25A, which offers 2.5 L displacement. The SOHC V6 engine with 24 valves offers a compression ratio of 9.0:1. The C25A engine pulls a horsepower and torque of 151 bhp @ 5,800 RPM and 213 Nm @ 4,500 RPM. The coupe used the C27A engine with a displacement of 2.7 Liters. The SOHC pumped out a decent horsepower of 177 hp. Besides, the Acura Legend, the engine is also featured in the Honda Accord and Sterling 827. The engines are mated with either the 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.

Second Generation Legend

Second generation units were launched in the business end of 1990. The SOHC engine pumped out a horsepower of 200 hp fitted with the standard 6-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic. The second generation is longer and bulkier, resulting in a more streamlined sedan. The model used a longitudinal front-engine and front-wheel drive layout. The engine was designed by Yusuke Saitoh in 1988. The second generation Acura Legend used the C32A & C32A1 V6 engine. The C32A engine pumped out a horsepower of 200 to 230 hp. The C32A1 engine used in the 1994-1995 Acura Legend GS sedan, and 1993-1995 Acura Legend LS and L coupe pumped out a horsepower and torque of 230 hp @ 6200 RPM and 279 Nm·@ 5000 RPM respectively. It proved as a reliable as well as an adequate powerful engine for mid-sized cars.
