The Isuzu Trooper spanned two generations, with the second generation rebadged as Acura SLX in the United States. It uses the more powerful V6 engine, along with optional two-wheel drive. The first generation Isuzu Trooper went into production from 1981 to 1991. It offered an engine displacement range of 2.0 to 2.8 L, mated with a range of automatic and manual transmission options. The first generation Troopers also sold in Central America, also rebadged in many of the overseas models.

The second-generation Isuzu Trooper was also sold as the Acura SLX in North America. The second generation Trooper went into production from 1991 to 2007. It is the upgraded and rebadged Isuzu Trooper sold in the United States from 1995 to 1999 for model years from 1996 to 1999. It sold in the United States until replaced by the Acura MDX in 2001. For model years from 1996 to 1997, the SLX featured only the 3.2 L SOHC or DOHC V6 engine.

For the 1998 model year, they introduced the 3.5 L DOHC V6 engine. The 3.2 L SOHC engine produced 175 horses at 4,888 rpms and 188 lb-ft of torque. The 3.2 DOHC V6 generated 195 horses @ 5.600 RPM and 195 lb-ft of torque @ 3,600 RPM. The 3.5 L DOHC V6 used from the 1998 model year, produced 215 horses. The earlier engines were mated with 4-speed automatic. Later, they also brought the 5-speed manual transmissions for hot rod enthusiasts.
